TAMPA, Fla., July 9 /PRNewswire/ — Gonzaba Medical Group, a multi-site medical practice with 20 physicians, has selected Intergy EHR by Sage Electronic health Records and Intergy by Sage Practice Management (PM) system to provide its newest San Antonio-based clinic with seamless access to patient and clinical data at all points of care — without the use of paper charts.
“We researched a multitude of healthcare IT vendors and found that only Sage Software offered a fully integrated database system that would allow us to interoperate with legacy clinical, administrative and financial applications,” said William Gonzaba, M.D., founder and CEO of Gonzaba Medical Group. “Since we have Intergy by Sage already installed in our other clinics and have experienced the resulting improvements in productivity and cash flow, we are confident that the addition of Intergy EHR will also deliver substantial workflow efficiencies and enhanced patient care.”
For 24 years, Gonzaba Medical Group, with more than 200 clinicians and staff, has been in the forefront of healthcare delivery in San Antonio with multiple clinic sites offering primary care and ancillary services such as physical therapy, radiology, MRI and CT imaging and occupational medicine. On August 1, 2008, the organization will launch a health and wellness clinic dedicated to fulfilling the needs of the City of San Antonio’s 11,000 employees. The facility will leverage Sage Software’s electronic health records and practice management solutions, as well as onsite medical equipment such as MRI scanners, bone densitometers and spiral CT scanners, to provide a “one-stop-shop” medical clinic experience. This new facility will allow patients to obtain all diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions in one visit, reducing the impact on patient’s limited time, travel and financial resources.
“Intergy EHR will enable us to save precious minutes once wasted searching for patient data — minutes that could make a difference in a patient’s outcome,” stated Dr. Gonzaba. “Additionally, the integrated system’s clinical decision-making tools will result in reduced patient errors and improved clinician compliance with best practices.”
“We share Gonzaba Medical Group’s passion for delivering exceptional customer service and patient care,” said Sharon Howard, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing for Sage Software. “The intuitive design of our solutions, combined with our extensive online and onsite training, will ensure that the August 1st launch will occur with great ease and success.”

Medco Health Solutions: RxHub and SureScripts Collaboration Provides Catalyst for Electronic Prescribing Growth

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., July 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — The historic collaboration between retail pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers — resulting in the merger of two complementary ePrescribing networks — will serve as a catalyst to fuel unprecedented growth in wiring the most-used benefit in America’s health care delivery system, Medco health Solutions, Inc. said in a statement today.
“Collaboration among retail pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers in pursuit of patient safety and health care efficiency represents a breakthrough that will help to forge a new future in American pharmacy,” said John Driscoll, President, New Markets, Medco. “For patients, payors, pharmacists and physicians, ePrescribing will help to reduce prescribing errors and drug interactions and maximize the use of the most effective, lowest-cost therapies — speeding the prescribing and dispensing process, while removing costs from the health care system.”
RxHub, launched by a consortium of the nation’s leading pharmacy benefit managers and SureScripts, a system sponsored by retail pharmacies earlier today announced that they would merge their industry-leading systems in an effort to further the adoption and use of ePrescribing technologies.
“The unification of SureScripts and RxHub creates a single platform for nationwide adoption and broad use of safe and secure ePrescribing technologies at a time when Congress is considering financial incentives to doctors by increasing Medicare and Medicare reimbursement for prescriptions transmitted electronically,” said Driscoll.
Technologies such as ePrescribing are considered pivotal in addressing the estimated 1.5 million preventable medication errors each year in the United States that cost the health care system as much as $3.5 billion.
A pioneer in adapting innovative technologies to advance pharmacy care, Medco invented the world’s most advanced automated dispensing pharmacies, the largest Internet pharmacy and in 2001 served as a founding member of RxHub. More than 55 percent of mail electronic prescriptions in the industry were sent to Medco’s mail-order pharmacies during the first quarter of 2008. As a major customer of network services for e-prescribing, Medco strongly supports this transaction.
Since 2005, Medco has partnered with health plans and private employers in collaborative ePrescribing pilots such as the award winning project in Southeast Michigan. According to a recent survey of participating doctors:
– Three out of four prescribers believe strongly that ePrescribing improves safety for their patients.
– Nearly 70 percent of respondents say it improves the quality of care.
– More than 80 percent of all prescriptions written by those surveyed are currently written electronically; four of 10 practices now only write ePrescriptions.
– More than 70 percent saw a reduction in communications with pharmacies over prescription questions.
– More than half strongly agree that ePrescribing saves clinicians time and increases productivity.

Potential Blues Merger Poses Concern for Area Health Systems

NASHVILLE, Tenn., June 24 /PRNewswire/ — HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of healthcare market intelligence, reports that the consolidation of Independence Blue Cross and Highmark has local hospital officials anxious about the potential influence of what would become the largest health insurer in the state. According to the latest Philadelphia Market Overview, the expected merger of the state’s two largest health insurers may encourage greater consolidation as hospitals seek greater negotiating clout.
“This merger will affect the balance of power between area health systems and health plans,” states Mark Cherry, market analyst for HealthLeaders- InterStudy and author of the report.
Combined with the recent economic slowdown, the effects of the Blue plan merger could exacerbate hospitals’ problems with uncompensated care while increasing interest rate payments on bonds used for construction. The best- positioned health systems in southeastern Pennsylvania are Jefferson health because of its dominant market share and University of Pennsylvania health System mostly due to its prestige. Many of the remaining hospitals are under increased pressure to consolidate or otherwise affiliate with these systems as demand increases for expenditures such as, electronic medical records and providing malpractice insurance to physicians, and as consumers are attracted to hospital branding.
The Hospital & health System Association of Pennsylvania is concerned about the ability of an even more dominant health plan to bully providers and lower reimbursements at one time. Because Philadelphia is home to several highly regarded academic hospitals, health plans in the area have traditionally been at a disadvantage, with large and respected health systems Jefferson health and Penn health able to dictate contractual terms. However, this pending blockbuster merger may have the hospitals making concessions.

One4One Campaign to Raise $1 Million to Improve Cervical Cancer Education and Resources

NEW YORK, April 25 /PRNewswire/ — One4One, a unique program focused on empowering women to help make a difference in the fight against cervical cancer, starts today during National Minority Cancer Awareness Week. One4One urges women to talk to their healthcare provider about ways they can help protect themselves from cervical cancer, while also raising money to increase cervical cancer information programs and other educational services, especially for those who may be at greater risk of developing the disease due to lack of access to information or healthcare.
Organizations participating in One4One are American Social health Association, Black Women’s health Imperative, Lance Armstrong Foundation, Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, Native American Cancer Research, National Asian Women’s health Organization, National Cervical Cancer Coalition, National Latina health Network and Tamika & Friends, Inc., with support from Merck & Co., Inc.
For each woman who pledges to talk to her healthcare provider about cervical cancer via between April 24 and June 5, Merck will donate $5, up to $1 million total, to the participating One4One organizations. The funds raised will be used to provide cervical cancer information programs and other educational services for women across the United States, including women at greater risk of developing the disease due to lack of access to information or healthcare.
In the U.S. alone, an average of 10 women die each day from cervical cancer, and it was estimated that more than 11,000 women would be diagnosed in 2007. “The loss of any life to cervical cancer is one too many, because it is a disease that we can help to prevent,” said Dr. Lisa Flowers, Assistant Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Emory University School of Medicine. “One4One is a great way to help strengthen the efforts of leading health organizations working to decrease the burden of cervical cancer in our country.”
Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of a virus, called the human papillomavirus (HPV). What many may not realize is that women can be exposed to HPV as early as their teens or 20s. About half of all women who develop cervical cancer are between 35 and 55 years old. The unfortunate reality is that women from certain racial and ethnic backgrounds are disproportionately affected by cervical cancer. There is a greater risk, in part, because some women of certain racial and ethnic backgrounds are living in poverty and have an overall lack of access to healthcare, including screening. Social and cultural barriers are other factors that often deter these women from receiving access to care.
During National Minority Cancer Awareness Week and beyond, the One4One participating organizations are working to help eliminate health disparities, by raising awareness and implementing critical education and service programs to help decrease the burden of cervical cancer nationwide.
For more information about cervical cancer, HPV and to make your cervical
cancer pledge today, visit .
