RESTON, Va., July 8 /PRNewswire/ — Brabeion Software, a leader in IT Governance, Risk and Compliance (IT GRC) Management, today announced that the health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST) has selected Brabeion as its IT GRC tool to aid in the development and coordination of the Common Security Framework (CSF). HITRUST will use key components of Brabeion’s acclaimed IT risk and compliance software and knowledgebase to assist in mapping the HITRUST CSF to regulations and industry control frameworks. Additionally, Brabeion will aid in providing assistance in format design of the CSF.
The HITRUST CSF is a comprehensive set of tools to aid organizations that create, store, access or exchange electronic health, financial, and other sensitive information in protecting their information assets and managing related risks, costs and complexities. The HITRUST CSF is comprised of three components — an Information Security Implementation Manual, a Standards and Regulations Cross-Reference Matrix, and a Readiness Assessment Toolkit.
“The magnitude, complexity and number of diverse organizations involved in developing the HITRUST Common Security Framework make it a very significant undertaking with many coordination challenges. The only way to meet our goals is to adopt a tool that can create the mappings, linkages and delivery format required as well as coordinate the numerous individuals developing and reviewing the various CSF components - and Brabeion is the best choice to aid in completing the task at hand,” said Daniel S. Nutkis, CEO of HITRUST.
Healthcare organizations are facing multiple challenges with regards to information security, including costs, complexities and inconsistencies surrounding regulations and standards, and the auditing of these across people, process and technologies. HITRUST is fostering the industry collaboration needed to solve these urgent problems. Leading health care organizations, professional services firms, information security specialists, liability insurers and other organizations have joined together to actively participate in the HITRUST CSF program.
“The HITRUST effort promises to transform information security programs within the entire healthcare industry. Both Brabeion and HITRUST share the same vision to provide organizations with a better way to manage risk, demonstrate compliance, and improve operational efficiency. We are excited to leverage our practical experience in IT GRC to play a hands-on role in this significant effort,” commented Julian Waits, CEO of Brabeion.
The HITRUST CSF is expected to be available in January 2009 for any organization that creates, accesses, stores or exchanges personal health and financial information. The Information Security Implementation Manual and Standards and Regulations Cross-Reference Matrix will be made available in both PDF and XML versions.

Microsoft HealthVault and RelayHealth to Connect Doctors and Patients

REDMOND, Wash., July 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Microsoft Corp. today announced a strategic collaboration with RelayHealth, McKesson Corp.’s connectivity business, to accelerate and improve the relationship between doctors and patients. Together, Microsoft HealthVault and RelayHealth will enable affordable patient connectivity with doctors’ offices and hospitals so patients can have security-enhanced, easy online access to medical care, information and records.
(Logo: )
HealthVault will provide physicians using RelayHealth’s Software as a Service (SaaS) platform with the technology to facilitate enhanced online patient service and communications. Physicians can easily employ the RelayHealth service, which includes electronic prescribing, through a Web browser as the initial step toward clinical automation of their practice. The service is also designed to integrate with electronic medical record systems already in use. For patients, the combined solution allows access to their personal health information and an online interaction with their personal physician.
“Until now, the ability for consumers to access and share appropriate health information online has not been possible, and as a result, personal health records (PHRs) have not been broadly adopted or consistently used,” said Pamela Pure, president of McKesson Technology Solutions. “Our relationship with Microsoft can change that. HealthVault offers consumers a convenient and accessible way to store and manage their healthcare and wellness data in one central place. The RelayHealth network then connects the consumer’s portfolio of information with the care provider and unifies the management of the personal health record.”
Pure added that RelayHealth’s security-enhanced network makes it easy for physicians to review clinical data and share appropriate information with their patients or other clinicians efficiently.
“This new relationship enables us to connect the personal health record to the care process so the information can be better utilized,” Pure said.
RelayHealth’s core services enable patients to schedule healthcare appointments online, request prescription refills, pay bills, obtain results and even visit their doctor online using security-enhanced webVisit(R) consultations for non-urgent care. HealthVault is a consumer health platform that allows people to collect, store and share health information with family members and participating healthcare providers.
“Together, Microsoft and RelayHealth will make it easier for consumers and doctors to exchange information that is a part of our everyday lives, such as ordering and filling prescriptions, receiving lab results and other important exchanges that impact our health and well-being,” said Peter Neupert, corporate vice president of the health Solutions Group at Microsoft. “Using the Internet to better connect patients and providers is a big step toward engaging people in their health decisions and ultimately improving the quality of patient care.”

District of Columbia Primary Care Association Selects Microsoft Amalga to Improve Patient Care for the Underserved

REDMOND, Wash., June 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — To improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivered to medically underserved D.C. residents, the District of Columbia Primary Care Association (DCPCA) will use Microsoft Amalga, the unified intelligence system, to enable the sharing of data among local hospitals and six community-based health centers that are part of a newly formed District of Columbia Regional health Information Organization (D.C. RHIO).
(Logo: )
DCPCA joins the Wisconsin health Information Exchange (WHIE) as the second organization to select Microsoft Amalga to allow the security-enhanced exchange of information between hospital systems and community health centers for optimal patient care.
“The sharing of medical information among D.C. health centers and local hospitals is uncommon,” said Sharon Baskerville, CEO of DCPCA. “Using Amalga to aggregate and share clinical data, we will break down the barriers, enabling these providers to improve clinical decision-making, minimize redundant work, reduce costs, and most important, provide higher-quality care to the neediest in our communities. We expect to create a sustainable business model in the RHIO marketplace.”
Announced by DCPCA in May, the D.C. RHIO will connect six health centers — representing 21 locations — and two hospitals, Georgetown University Hospital and Washington Hospital Center, with the purpose of improving both the quality and accessibility of healthcare for vulnerable members of society. The six health centers are Bread for the City, Family and Medical Counseling Service, La Clinica del Pueblo, Mary’s Center for Maternal and Child Care, So Others Might Eat (SOME), and the Whitman-Walker Clinic.
Implementing Amalga will give physicians at Georgetown University Hospital and Washington Hospital Center real-time viewing of up-to-date patient information stored in systems of the RHIO-affiliated health centers. This capability will allow DCPCA to help achieve its overall goals for the RHIO, including improving chronic disease management, quality monitoring and research ability; minimizing duplicative work (e.g., lab tests); reducing costs; evaluating critical health indicators on an ongoing basis; and giving patients security-enhanced online access to their health information.
“I congratulate Microsoft on its participation in the D.C. RHIO,” said Dr. Garth Graham, deputy assistant secretary for Minority Health, Department of health and Human Services. “Information technology in healthcare has the ability to transform our current health segments into a true healthcare system that serves the needs of all consumers and brings timely information to appropriate providers caring for consumers as patients. During this time, when we are just beginning to develop the interoperable networks, it is crucial that today’s medically underserved communities are included in these efforts.”
WHIE also has implemented Microsoft Amalga to accomplish its vision of “improving the quality, safety, efficiency, and accessibility of healthcare and public health.” WHIE’s Emergency Department (ED) Linking Project is a pilot project that has 11 Milwaukee metropolitan hospitals providing data to the exchange with clinicians in the first three emergency departments now reviewing data from the exchange on all patients as part of day-to-day clinical practice.
“With WHIE, ED clinicians have a perspective of their patients’ history previously unknown to them,” said Kim R. Pemble, executive director for WHIE.
Tools in WHIE, such as Clinician Communication Messages, enable communication among clinicians and set the stage for community-level, patient-centric care plans.
“Very early feedback from ED case managers already reflects significant value of WHIE in connecting patients with ongoing care services,” Pemble said. “The addition of Medicaid claims information, planned for July 2008, will provide pharmacy information and other data to further enhance the value to clinicians.”
Microsoft Amalga addresses a common and critical challenge of healthcare providers — integrating vast amounts of clinical, administrative, and financial information that flow in and out of disparate information systems, and tailoring that information for use by physicians, analysts, laboratory technicians, nurses and administrators. Amalga takes advantage of the hospital’s investment in health information technology solutions and makes it possible for the whole health system to gain quick access to data and turn information into critical knowledge that facilitates better decision-making and improved patient outcomes.
Founded in 1975, Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Selects Allscripts for Electronic Health Record Subsidy Program

CHICAGO, June 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Allscripts, the leading provider of clinical software and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, announced today that it will offer qualified medical staff members of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Calif. preferred pricing on the company’s Electronic health Record (EHR) and Practice Management (PM) solutions.
(Logo: )
Hoag Hospital, in its commitment to enable excellent quality care and services, is leveraging the recent Stark and Anti-kickback reforms to assist Orange County physicians in the adoption of Electronic health Records in their private practices. Hoag believes it is important to promote open, interconnected, interoperable Electronic health Record applications that help improve the quality of patient care and efficiency in the delivery of health care to patients. To facilitate this, Hoag has signed an agreement with Allscripts to subsidize its EHR-PM solutions for independent members of its medical staff, a major step in the hospital’s community-wide initiative to electronically link hospital services, physicians and other healthcare providers to offer truly integrated patient care.
“The leading hospitals across the country are increasingly coming to the conclusion that connectivity with the physicians who practice in their communities and refer the bulk of their patients is critical to delivering higher quality patient care and also to a strong business model,” said Allscripts Chief Executive Officer Glen Tullman. “The cornerstone of the community model is immediate access to patient information, anytime and anywhere, and we are proud that Hoag Hospital, a national leader in quality patient care, has selected Allscripts to help deliver on that vision.”
Allscripts Electronic health Record and Practice Management for small and medium-sized physician practices are easy-to-deploy, physician-centric solutions that improve the delivery of safe, cost-effective, high-quality care by automating common tasks such as prescribing and refilling medications, ordering and viewing tests, and documenting care. Built on a single intelligent platform, the Allscripts solution will link business and clinical operations of each practice, and provide caregivers instant and secure access to the complete patient record.
Hoag staff physicians who select Allscripts will access the Electronic health Record and Practice Management solutions over the Internet via Application Service Provider (ASP) hosting and support. The ASP model provides a simple, affordable means of delivering vital patient information to caregivers without the upfront costs of purchasing new equipment to host the solution themselves. Because the ASP model also speeds deployment, it is becoming an increasingly important option for mid-size and independent practices.
Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian is a 498-bed, not-for-profit, acute care hospital with more than 1,000 physicians on staff. Fully accredited by The Joint Commission and designated as a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Hoag offers a comprehensive mix of health care services, including Centers of Excellence in cancer, heart and vascular, orthopedics and women’s health services. Integrated Behavioral Health Optimizes Claims Processing With BlueThread’s SmartDesk, K2 Workflow and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server

ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 19 /PRNewswire/ — Integrated Behavioral health (IBH) has selected BlueThread Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server-based enterprise content management (ECM) solutions and K2 software for process-driven applications, to improve operational efficiency and optimize claims processing.
IBH processes behavioral health and EAP claims for 20 of the Fortune 100 companies, 6,000 mid-to-small-sized employers and manages more than 1.5 million covered lives in the United States. The now-deployed implementation has enabled IBH to process most claims within 24 hours and exceed service-level agreements (SLAs) with its members.
When IBH began its search for comprehensive ECM software, the company required a comprehensive solution that could give it the processing power and flexibility mandated by America’s largest healthcare insurers. After reviewing solutions from traditional ECM vendors, IBH partnered with BlueThread Technologies (BlueThread), a leading provider in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server-based ECM solutions.
Working with the skilled IT group at IBH, BlueThread deployed its SmartDesk desktop and K2 solution to maximize IBH’s productivity, lower cycle times and improve customer service levels. “We have an unbelievable problem-solving tool,” said Doug Miller, IBH Director of Information Systems. “The solution provides the flexibility to allow our company to problem solve and dynamically change processes as needed, and we now know the status and location of every piece of work and content. All of the necessary paperwork is immediately available to case workers and processed with nationally established professional protocols.” Miller continues, “SharePoint, SmartDesk and K2 has not only changed the way IBH does business … it has become the only way we do business.”
“Health plans are under unprecedented market pressure to improve the consumer experience and provide better responsiveness when processing claims,” said Dennis Schmuland, M.D., U.S. health plan industry director, Microsoft Corp. “SmartDesk from BlueThread is a great example of how health plans can take full advantage of the built-in ECM capabilities of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, along with its familiar, easy-to-use and widely supported platform, to quickly solve some of their most critical business issues.”
Prior to implementing the BlueThread solution, IBH had large backlogs, hundreds of file cabinets full of client charts, and its business was growing rapidly. Since deploying SmartDesk, IBH’s operations have doubled without adding full-time employees and now processes most claims within a single day. Ed Bosanac, Dr.P.H., Office of the President, said, “The BlueThread/ SharePoint Server solution has allowed IBH to work more efficiently, more accurately and permitted our company to capitalize on leading edge technology. The bottom line is that the solution BlueThread brought to the table improves IBH’s position in the market place.”
