Pedal Your Way to Better Health, Rewards With Blue Cross’ New ‘do cycle’ Program

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

EAGAN, Minn., July 10 /PRNewswire/ — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross) wants more Minnesotans to reap the benefits of “pedal power” this summer. The health plan’s do Campaign has teamed up with Minnesota bicycle shops to create a new “do cycle” program where people can earn a range of free and discounted merchandise, based on the number of miles ridden.
“Minnesota has more miles of paved bike trails than any other state, and Minneapolis ranks second behind Portland, Oregon for having the highest percentage of people who bike to work,” explained Jill Chamberlain, health improvement project manager with Blue Cross. “So, we’re excited to be working with the various bike shops on this program. Whether you’re an avid rider or need to dust off that bike sitting in the garage, we want to encourage people of all ages to get pedaling,” added Chamberlain.
To get started in the “do cycle” program, sign up at . Follow the instructions online and pick one of the 20 participating bike shops. Once registered, cyclists go to their selected bike shop to record their bike’s current computer/odometer mileage (bikes need to be equipped with a mileage-tracking device and can be purchased for as little as $20, not including installation costs). Cyclists can redeem their miles once they reach any of the following milestones:
— 50 miles — earns a free do water bottle
— 100 miles — earns 10 percent off purchase at the selected bike shop
— 200 miles — earns 10 percent off purchases at the selected bike shop,
plus either a free pair of do cycle socks or a do water bottle
— 400 miles — earns 10 percent off purchases at the selected bike shop,
plus either a free do cycle T-shirt, pair of do cycle socks or do water
bottle

Participating bike retailers include all Minnesota locations of Erik’s Bike Shop, Freewheel Bike, and Penn Cycle & Fitness.
“Daily physical activity can reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other illnesses. Bicycling is not only fun, it’s also a very easy way to become more physically active,” said Dr. Marc Manley, vice president and medical director for population health at Blue Cross. “Whether commuting to school or work or just for recreation, time spent on a bike is a good investment in improving your health.”
Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating, combined, are the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and are responsible for millions of dollars in health care costs in Minnesota annually. To address this problem, Blue Cross developed the do Campaign, which encourages Minnesotans to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day, as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The do Campaign is part of Blue Cross’ Prevention Minnesota initiative and is funded entirely by Blue Cross’ settlement proceeds from its historic lawsuit against the tobacco companies. Prevention Minnesota tackles preventable heart disease and cancer by addressing their root causes — tobacco use, physical inactivity and unhealthy eating. Stay Safe This Summer With Chemical-Free Sunscreen and DEET-Free Bug Repellent, Says Natural Solutions Magazine

BOULDER, Colo., July 9 /PRNewswire/ — People are more likely to be active in the summertime — hiking, biking, swimming, or just relaxing in the backyard — than at any other time of the year. And the sun’s rays and myriad pesky flying insects are at their peak. Natural Solutions: Vibrant health Balanced Living magazine has compiled a list of nontoxic sunscreens and insect repellents just in time for the dog days ahead. The August issue, on newsstands now, reports in the articles “Slather, Play, Repeat: Sun Encounters of the Safest Kind” and “A Better Buzzkill” that there are healthier ways to protect your skin when it’s under attack.
“We should all use sunscreen on a regular basis this time of year, but even some natural sunscreens contain ingredients we should avoid. Chemicals and nanoparticles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — created from nanotechnology — are tiny enough to be absorbed into the skin,” says Linda Sparrowe, editor-in-chief of Natural Solutions. “While zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are regarded as safe and effective sunscreens, this article highlights potential problems when they are ‘nanoized’ and offers a list of alternative products.”
Natural Solutions’ editors tested seven sunscreens devoid of nanoparticles. Their three favorite brands based on absorbability include Lavera Family Sun Spray SPF 15, Lotus Moon Sage Sun Protective Creme SPF 25, and Alba Botanica Fragrance Free Mineral Sunscreen SPF 18.
DEET, a pesticide developed by the U.S. Army in 1946, is the active ingredient in most conventional insect repellents. Yet the EPA says exposure to DEET should be brief, alluding to its toxicity. For a nontoxic, bug-free summer, head to the natural products store for lemon-eucalyptus oil, citronella oil, neem oil, and lavender oil, all of which throw bugs off the human scent and make skin taste unappealing.

Gonzaba Medical Group Selects Intergy by Sage Electronic Health Records at New Paperless City of San Antonio Clinic

TAMPA, Fla., July 9 /PRNewswire/ — Gonzaba Medical Group, a multi-site medical practice with 20 physicians, has selected Intergy EHR by Sage Electronic health Records and Intergy by Sage Practice Management (PM) system to provide its newest San Antonio-based clinic with seamless access to patient and clinical data at all points of care — without the use of paper charts.
“We researched a multitude of healthcare IT vendors and found that only Sage Software offered a fully integrated database system that would allow us to interoperate with legacy clinical, administrative and financial applications,” said William Gonzaba, M.D., founder and CEO of Gonzaba Medical Group. “Since we have Intergy by Sage already installed in our other clinics and have experienced the resulting improvements in productivity and cash flow, we are confident that the addition of Intergy EHR will also deliver substantial workflow efficiencies and enhanced patient care.”
For 24 years, Gonzaba Medical Group, with more than 200 clinicians and staff, has been in the forefront of healthcare delivery in San Antonio with multiple clinic sites offering primary care and ancillary services such as physical therapy, radiology, MRI and CT imaging and occupational medicine. On August 1, 2008, the organization will launch a health and wellness clinic dedicated to fulfilling the needs of the City of San Antonio’s 11,000 employees. The facility will leverage Sage Software’s electronic health records and practice management solutions, as well as onsite medical equipment such as MRI scanners, bone densitometers and spiral CT scanners, to provide a “one-stop-shop” medical clinic experience. This new facility will allow patients to obtain all diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions in one visit, reducing the impact on patient’s limited time, travel and financial resources.
“Intergy EHR will enable us to save precious minutes once wasted searching for patient data — minutes that could make a difference in a patient’s outcome,” stated Dr. Gonzaba. “Additionally, the integrated system’s clinical decision-making tools will result in reduced patient errors and improved clinician compliance with best practices.”
“We share Gonzaba Medical Group’s passion for delivering exceptional customer service and patient care,” said Sharon Howard, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing for Sage Software. “The intuitive design of our solutions, combined with our extensive online and onsite training, will ensure that the August 1st launch will occur with great ease and success.”

Microsoft HealthVault and RelayHealth to Connect Doctors and Patients

REDMOND, Wash., July 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Microsoft Corp. today announced a strategic collaboration with RelayHealth, McKesson Corp.’s connectivity business, to accelerate and improve the relationship between doctors and patients. Together, Microsoft HealthVault and RelayHealth will enable affordable patient connectivity with doctors’ offices and hospitals so patients can have security-enhanced, easy online access to medical care, information and records.
(Logo: )
HealthVault will provide physicians using RelayHealth’s Software as a Service (SaaS) platform with the technology to facilitate enhanced online patient service and communications. Physicians can easily employ the RelayHealth service, which includes electronic prescribing, through a Web browser as the initial step toward clinical automation of their practice. The service is also designed to integrate with electronic medical record systems already in use. For patients, the combined solution allows access to their personal health information and an online interaction with their personal physician.
“Until now, the ability for consumers to access and share appropriate health information online has not been possible, and as a result, personal health records (PHRs) have not been broadly adopted or consistently used,” said Pamela Pure, president of McKesson Technology Solutions. “Our relationship with Microsoft can change that. HealthVault offers consumers a convenient and accessible way to store and manage their healthcare and wellness data in one central place. The RelayHealth network then connects the consumer’s portfolio of information with the care provider and unifies the management of the personal health record.”
Pure added that RelayHealth’s security-enhanced network makes it easy for physicians to review clinical data and share appropriate information with their patients or other clinicians efficiently.
“This new relationship enables us to connect the personal health record to the care process so the information can be better utilized,” Pure said.
RelayHealth’s core services enable patients to schedule healthcare appointments online, request prescription refills, pay bills, obtain results and even visit their doctor online using security-enhanced webVisit(R) consultations for non-urgent care. HealthVault is a consumer health platform that allows people to collect, store and share health information with family members and participating healthcare providers.
“Together, Microsoft and RelayHealth will make it easier for consumers and doctors to exchange information that is a part of our everyday lives, such as ordering and filling prescriptions, receiving lab results and other important exchanges that impact our health and well-being,” said Peter Neupert, corporate vice president of the health Solutions Group at Microsoft. “Using the Internet to better connect patients and providers is a big step toward engaging people in their health decisions and ultimately improving the quality of patient care.”
Founded in 1975, Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

Holistic Health Solutions Offers a Long Awaited Relief for Menopausal Symptoms

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., July 7 /PRNewswire/ — Traditional medicine attempts to treat menopausal symptoms with drugs or hormones. However, they don’t handle underlying causes. As a result, menopausal women may have to suffer.
There is another alternative. Through Holistic health Solutions, a woman may significantly decrease her menopausal symptoms using a variety of all-natural treatments.
“The goal of holistic healing is to remove or reduce all of the causes of a health problem instead of just masking the symptom. Furthermore, I teach my patients to do many of the therapies at home to maintain their results,” explains Dr. Stewart Edrich, DC.
As for menopause, Edrich begins by addressing the functioning of a woman’s liver and adrenals. The liver must be “de-toxified” and the adrenals must be strong. These organs are key to hormonal balance.
“Giving a women more hormones is not always the right place to start.” Edrich explains, “The trick lies in the efficiency of the other organs. If you make too much cortisol “The belly fat hormone” your body will “steal” the sex hormones to make more cortisol, and if the liver is too toxic it won’t be able to re-cycle used estrogen which throws off the hormonal balance.”
Edrich believes, “First use holistic processes that focus on diet and lifestyle, use natural methods based on Applied Kinesiology and 3000 years of Chinese medicine to determine function; such as location and types of symptoms, condition of the tongue hair and fingernails. If the problem is not resolving then saliva, blood, stool or urine tests may give additional data.”
For treatment first he uses diet, exercise and lifestyle, then uses herbs and supplements along with postural balancing and acupressure.
Even though detoxification and tonification seem simple, most people will not be able to do it on their own without professional guidance and coaching.
During the course of Edrich’s holistic practice (since 1992), many women in the Los Angeles and Orange County area have benefited through his methods. Many got rid of menopausal symptoms, but they also had an opportunity to address other their health problems such as weight gain, insomnia or depression and pain.
Edrich says, “My approaches focus on making you healthier, and healthier people feel better.”
